Cambados: European Wine Capital 2017
The historical town of Cambados in Galicia has been designated European Wine Capital for 2017. Known as the “Albariño wine capital”, it’s the starting point on the Rias Baixas wine route of 22 cellars. The town boasts one of Spain’s best-known wine museums and a bronze statue of Bacchus, the Roman God of wine. Cheers!
Liébana and Caravaca de la Cruz: Jubilee Year
The Pope has granted the Holy Year honor for 2017 to Liébana – famous for the Lebaniego Way, one of Spain’s great Christian pilgrimages. Religious, cultural gastronomic and leisure activities will reign throughout this Cantabrian town.
In the south, Caravaca de la Cruz, one of the world’s five holy cities, will also celebrate its Jubilee Year. Thousands will flock to the town and its medieval castle, which will brim with life, history and wonder.
Huelva: Gastronomic Capital
Famed for its fish and seafood, Huelva has been chosen as Spain’s gastronomic capital for 2017. Visitors can catch a bite in the many bars, tapas joints and restaurants that will whip up their finest dishes and delicacies.
Teruel: “Europe in Love” City
Romantics and cynics can unite in February in Teruel, to commemorate the tragedy of the “Lovers of Teruel”. The medieval city is staging scenes from the story as part of the Europe in Love network, which pays tribute to cities where love stories have shaped customs and culture.
Seville: 400th Anniversary of Murillo
From September 2017, Andalusia will come out to celebrate the anniversary of the birth of the painter Murillo. Key exhibitions, conferences and general merriment will run from Fall through the end of the year, especially in the vibrant city of Seville.
Madrid: Picasso-Lautrec Exhibition
Art lovers can feast for their eyes from October 2017 to January 2018, as Madrid’s emblematic Thyssen Museum hosts a Picasso-Lautrec exhibition. Spanish and French culture embrace in this unique expo that examines the relationship between the early work of Pablo Picasso and that of the French artist Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec.
